Trooper William V. McDonagh was shot and killed on December 14, 1975 when responded to a fight in the hamlet of Sugar Loaf. He was 24 years old.

A man shot and killed his girlfriend near the phone booth she had used to call for help. When Trooper McDonagh arrived at the scene of the woman's murder, he was shot by the suspect. A back-up patrol killed the man when he refused to surrender.

Trooper McDonagh was a two-year veteran and was assigned to SP Monroe at the time of his death.
