Investigator Richard B. Snyder was shot and killed while interviewing a witness on September 20, 1984. He was 37 years old at the time of his death.
Investigator Snyder was shot in an ambush by a subject released on bail, pending trial for conspiracy and attempted robbery. Revenge is believed to be the motive for the shooting, the suspect had been arrested by Investigator Snyder for burglary, unlawful imprisonment and menacing. The subject later committed suicide.
Investigator Snyder was a decorated Marine veteran who served in Vietnam. He joined the State Police in 1974 and was assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Wurtsboro at the time of his death.
