On July 2, 1974, Trooper Raymond C. Dodge, 28, died after being shot near Dresden, NY. Trooper Dodge was assigned to investigate a property line dispute between neighbors who owned adjoining lakefront cottages on the shores of Seneca Lake. Trooper Dodge resolved the dispute, but was called back when tempers rekindled. Upon his return, he was hit by a shotgun blast, but was able to return fire and shot the suspect in the chest and legs. Trooper Dodge died of wounds to his chest and upper arm.

He joined the State Police in January the year he died.
