Update: State Police Investigating Death of State Parks Employee who was battling forest fire in Greenwood Lake

Further investigation revealed that on November 9, 2024, at approximately 3:44 p.m., troopers from the Monroe barracks responded to a possible forest fire death in Sterling Forest Greenwood Lake, NY. The victim identified as Dariel Vasquez, age 18, of Pomona, NY was struck by a tree while battling the forest fire. Vasquez ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

On November 9, 2024, Dariel Vasquez, an 18-year-old Parks and Recreation Aide employed by the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Department, was killed while battling a forest fire in Sterling Forest, located in Greenwood Lake, New York. The New York State Police are currently investigating the incident.
