*UPDATE* State Police investigate Thruway crash in Guilderland that resulted in multiple injuries

*UPDATE April 29, 2024*

On April 25, 2024, State Police of Latham arrested Donald Andrews Jr., 35 of Schenectady, NY for

• Aggravated Vehicular Assault, a class “C” felony
• Three counts of Assault in the second degree, a class “D” felony
• Four counts of Assault in the third degree, a class “A” misdemeanor
• Four counts of Reckless Endangerment in the second degree, a class “A” misdemeanor
• Two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class “A” misdemeanor
• Driving While Ability Impaired- Combined Influence of Drugs and Alcohol
• Numerous additional Vehicle and Traffic Law violations

The investigation has determined Andrews was operating the sedan that exited the Crossgates ramp overpass in Guilderland, NY, and eventually landed on I-87 northbound (Thruway) , causing secondary crashes that resulted in several individuals sustaining serious injuries. The cause of the crash has been determined to be a combination of excessive speed and Andrews’s alleged impairment by drugs and alcohol.

On February 11, 2024, State Police of Latham responded to the report of a two-car rollover crash on I-87 Thruway with multiple injuries.

On February 11, 2024, at about 7:21 p.m., Troopers responded to the report of a two-car crash on I-87 Thruway in the area of the Crossgates Mall ramp overpass from I-87 Adirondack Northway.  The investigation has determined a vehicle was southbound exiting I-87 Adirondack Northway, traveling on the ramp to the Crossgates Mall when it failed to navigate the curve of the roadway.  The car traveled through the guide rail, off the overpass and landed on I-87 Thruway coming to rest in the two left northbound lanes.  A northbound SUV on I-87 Thruway struck the car, causing the SUV to overturn.  Four individuals occupied each vehicle (total of eight) and all individuals were transported to The Albany Medical Center for treatment.  Three of those individuals reportedly sustained serious injuries and are listed in critical condition. 

All northbound lanes I-87 Thruway and the Crossgates Mall ramp were closed for approximately eight hours for the investigation, vehicle removal and repairs, they have since been reopened.  The investigation is ongoing, and no further updates are available on the injured individuals.
