The deceased individuals have been identified as David L. Book, 70 and Nancy L. Book, 64.
On June 4, 2026, Doctor Michael Sikirica conducted an autopsy of both individuals at Saratoga Hospital and determined their causes of death to be Asphyxia due to inhalation of smoke and heated products of combustion.
The cause of the fire is pending further investigation in partnership with the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency services Fire Inspection and Investigation Branch.

On June 2, 2026, State Police responded to a home on Old Saratoga Road in Moreau for reports of a structure fire.
On June 2, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m., troopers responded to 270 Old Saratoga Road in Moreau for a reported house fire. An individual was able to be removed from the residence but later succumbed to their injuries. After the fire was extinguished, another individual was found deceased in the home.
The investigation is ongoing. Saratoga County Fire Investigators and New York State Fire Investigators responded to the scene.
