Troopers shoot a Maine man attempting to strike a Town of Lumberland Constable with a vehicle

On July 2, 2024, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Troopers in Sullivan County responded for a report of a suspicious subject in a vehicle at a business on State Route 97 in Barryville, New York. Troopers located the subject, who claimed to have a gun and stated that he would shoot the troopers.

New York State Police attempted to stop the individual, later identified as Paul Gosselin, age 63, from Augusta, Maine, when Gosselin fled to a secondary business on State Route 97 where he exited his vehicle. He then re-enters his vehicle and begins to drive in the direction of a Town of Lumberland Constable who was on foot in proximity to Gosselin’s vehicle on State Route 97.   A Trooper on scene observed the vehicle accelerating towards the Constable and discharged rounds at the vehicle striking Gosselin one time.  Troopers rendered first aid and EMS transported Gosselin to an area hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition.
