The New York State Police are warning the public of a recent scam targeting residents in Troop K. In these incidents, scammers are contacting victims by phone, falsely claiming the victim has an outstanding balance that must be paid immediately.
Victims are instructed to withdraw large sums of money from a financial institution and meet a "courier" at their residence or a designated location to hand over cash. This is a fraudulent and criminal scheme designed to steal money directly from victims.
Troop K is urging the public to remain vigilant and follow these critical safety guidelines:
- NEVER provide your bank account information, Social Security number, or other personal or financial details over the phone or through email.
- If someone contacts you requesting that you withdraw money or hand over cash — IT IS A SCAM.
- If you receive a suspicious call, email, or in-person request, contact the New York State Police immediately before taking any action.
These scams often prey on fear and urgency. Take time to verify and protect yourself and your loved ones.
