Traffic stop in Cortlandville leads to drug arrest

On July 30, 2024, New York State Police at Homer seized a large quantity of illegal drugs resulting from a traffic stop on Interstate 81 in Cortlandville.  

Troopers monitoring traffic on Interstate 81 observed a vehicle speeding while traveling northbound and initiated a traffic stop.  

Vehicle operator Eduardo R. Azcona, 43, of Corona, NY, provided conflicting stories about his travel route and was determined to be operating the vehicle with a suspended license. Azcona attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody after an altercation and the assistance of a taser.  

A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, resulted in the discovery of:

-Approximately 3.5 ounces of crack cocaine
-Approximately 1.9 ounces of powder cocaine
-Approximately 28 grams of MDMA
-Approximately 11.4 ounces of fentanyl 
-Approximately 20 ounces of cannabis

Eduardo R. Azcona was charged with:
-Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the first degree (narcotic drug 8 oz or more)– class “A” felony
-Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the second degree (hallucinogen) – class “A” felony
-Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the third degree (narcotic) – class “B” felony
-Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the third degree – class “B” felony
-Criminal Possession of Cannabis in the third degree – misdemeanor (more than 16 oz)
-Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the third degree - misdemeanor
Resisting Arrest – misdemeanor

Azcona was processed and transported to the Cortland County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment.
