State Police make an arrest in the death of a two-year-old boy left in a car in Monticello.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at approximately 6:43 p.m., the Village of Monticello Police responded to a 911 call of a child left in a vehicle at the Sleepy Hollow Apartment Complex. Upon arrival, officers located a two-year-old male in a 2012 Ford Explorer suffering from cardiac arrest. Officers from the Monticello Police Department, Monticello Fire, and Catskill Hatzolah EMS immediately began life saving measures, which were unsuccessful. The child was later identified as Antonio Ware Suarez. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators from the State Police Liberty Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) arrived at the scene to assist. State Police assumed the lead and an investigation was conducted in conjunction with the Village of Monticello Police Department and the Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office.  Investigation revealed that Antonio was left in the vehicle excess of four hours. His cause of death was determined to be by hyperthermia.

On August 1, 2024, state police investigators arrested Sarah Carter, age 33 from Monticello. She was charged with Criminal Negligent Homicide and Endangering the Welfare of Child. She was arraigned in front of Village of Monticello Justice Solomon remanded to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash, $150,000 bond, $300,000 secured to reappear August 26, 2024, at 9 a.m. in the Village of Monticello Court.
