State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash in the town of Verona

On March 10, 2024, at 10:10 p.m., State Police in Oneida responded to a reported pedestrian struck by a vehicle on State Route 365 near Stoney Brook Road in the town of Verona, Oneida County.

A 2017 Chevrolet Express Van, operated by Mark E. Thompson, age 55 from Rome, NY was traveling eastbound on State Route 365 when 25-year-old Tyler M. Atkinson from Oneida, NY was walking along the shoulder when he stepped into the lane of travel and was struck by the express van.

Atkinson was transported to Oneida Health Emergency Room where he was pronounced deceased.

Thompson was not injured in the crash.  He tested negative at the scene for any alcohol/drug impairment by a State Police Drug Recognition Expert.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Oneida Indian Nation Police, and EMS personnel.

The investigation is continuing.
