State Police arrest Westerlo man following standoff
Press Release

On June 8, 2024, State Police arrested Thomas F. Conover, 35, of Westerlo, NY, for Menacing in the second degree, Reckless Endangerment in the second degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the fourth degree, and nine counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

On June 8, 2024, at about 9:28 p.m., Troopers responded to the report of a disturbance involving a firearm in Westerlo, NY.  The investigation determined Conover was reportedly asked to leave the victim’s property, which he did.  He later returned with a shotgun.  Conover allegedly displayed and aimed the firearm at a large group of people, which included numerous children all under the age of 15.

Conover fled the location prior to law enforcement’s arrival.  He was located in his home, where he barricaded himself and refused to exit.  After a short standoff and discussion with a Crisis Negotiator, Conover voluntarily exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.  The firearm involved was recovered and seized along with additional illegally possessed firearms.

Conover was transported to SP New Scotland for processing.  He was arraigned at the Westerlo Town Court and released on his own recognizance.
