State Police arrest Bennington man following stolen gun investigation
Press Release

On September 17, 2024, State Police of Brunswick, with the assistance of the Bennington Police Department, arrested Leon D. Lovelace, 29, of Bennington, VT, on a warrant for three counts of Grand Larceny in the fourth degree.

On June 11, 2024, at about 9:31 p.m., Troopers received a complaint that money and a firearm had been taken from a home in Pittstown, NY. During the investigation, it was discovered that three firearms had been stolen from the house. Lovelace had been left unattended in the residence on that day and allegedly took all three firearms without the victim’s knowledge or permission.

One of the stolen firearms was recovered in North Adams, MA, during an unrelated investigation by the North Adams Police Department (MA).

Lovelace was located in Bennington, VT, by the Bennington Police Department on September 5, 2024, and held as a fugitive from justice during the extradition process.

On September 17, 2024, State Police took Lovelace into custody in Rutland, VT, and transported him to SP Brunswick for processing.  He was then arraigned at the Pittstown Town Court and released on his own recognizance.

If you have any information about the location of the two additional stolen firearms, please contact SP Brunswick at 518-457-6811 or email [email protected]. Lovelace has known ties to New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Georgia and may have transported the firearms out of New York State.
