

On May 4, 2025, at approximately 3:21 a.m., Troopers from State Police Coxsackie observed a 2016 Mercedes-Benz traveling northbound on Interstate 87, the New York State Thruway, in the town of Athens in violation of multiple New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws.
Troopers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and interviewed the driver and sole occupant, identified as Charles B. McCormick, age 31, of Albany, NY. During the investigation, Troopers determined that McCormick was impaired.
Multiple attempts were made to detain McCormick, who physically resisted arrest and managed to flee the scene in the vehicle at a high rate of speed. McCormick traveled northbound on I-87, reaching speeds more than 120 MPH. A tire deflation device was deployed, which ultimately disabled the vehicle. The pursuit concluded safely on the eastern shoulder of the highway following a coordinated effort by responding units.
McCormick was taken into custody without further incident. A search of the vehicle and surrounding area resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of suspected illegal narcotics, including over one gram of crack/cocaine, over 140 grams of cocaine, and more than 15 grams of fentanyl. The suspect was transported to State Police Catskill for processing.
McCormick was charged with the following:
- Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree (Narcotic) – Class B Felony
- Two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree (Intent to Sell) – Class B Felony
- Assault on a Police Officer/Firefighter/EMT – Class C Felony
- Two counts of Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree – Class D Felony
- Tampering with Physical Evidence – Class E Felony
- Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree (Hallucinogen) – Class B Felony
- Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree (Intent to Sell) – Class B Felony
- Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd Degree – Class A Felony
- Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree – Class A Misdemeanor
- Resisting Arrest – Class A Misdemeanor
- Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree – Class A Misdemeanor
- Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs (First Offense) – Unclassified Misdemeanor
McCormick was arraigned in Athens Town Court and remanded to Greene County Jail pending a future court appearance scheduled for May 8, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
