Personal Injury accident leads to DWI arrest in the town of Jay
press release

On April 12, 2025, State Police arrested Philip A. Renderer, 48, of Upper Jay, NY, on multiple charges, including third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, and driving while intoxicated (with a previous conviction within the last 10 years). He also received vehicle and traffic tickets.

At approximately 5:56 p.m. on the same day, Troopers responded to a two-car injury accident at the intersection of State Route 86 and State Route 9N in the town of Jay. Before the Troopers arrived, they were informed that one of the vehicles, a black 2014 Volkswagen, had fled the scene.

An investigation revealed that a black 2014 Volkswagen was traveling east on State Route 86 and failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding with a white 2005 Ford pickup truck driven by Eleri J. Smith, 42, of Upper Jay. After the collision, the Volkswagen fled the scene but later crashed further down the road on State Route 9N, veering off the roadway. The driver of the Volkswagen was identified as Renderer. Smith was medically evaluated on the scene and was not transported to the hospital.

While the Troopers were interviewing Renderer, he exhibited signs of impairment. He was transported to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. However, while at the hospital, Renderer became combative with the hospital staff. After being medically evaluated by a doctor, he was released.

Following his release, Renderer was arrested and taken to SP Ray Brook for processing. He was held in the Essex County jail for a pre-arraignment hold. On April 13, 2025, he was arraigned in the Town of Jay and was released on his own recognizance.
