New York State Police to Hold Memorial Service Honoring Trooper Phillip E. Gonterman

The New York State Police, Troop D, will hold a memorial service to honor Trooper Phillip E. Gonterman, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The solemn ceremony will include remarks and the unveiling of a memorial sign in his honor.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Trooper Gonterman’s line-of-duty death. To commemorate his service and sacrifice, a memorial sign will be unveiled at Veteran’s Park in the village of Pulaski, located at the site of his fatal crash.

This ceremony is part of the New York State Police’s ongoing commitment to honor the memory, courage, and sacrifice of Troopers who have died in the line of duty while serving Troop D. Background on Trooper Gonterman:

Trooper Phillip E. Gonterman, age 24, was killed in the line of duty on September 25, 1925, in the village of Pulaski. While attempting to overtake a stolen vehicle, a car pulled into his path, forcing him to swerve. He lost control of his motorcycle and struck a tree at the intersection of Jefferson and Hubble Streets. He was killed instantly. Trooper Gonterman was a two-year veteran of the State Police and was assigned to the Pulaski Station.
