Investigators looking to ID two men who used fake $100s at Marathon store

Press Release

New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Homer is looking for the public’s assistance in identifying the two pictured subjects.

On October 30, 2023, at approximately 1:16 p.m., two males entered the Dollar General on West Main Street in the village of Marathon and purchased a gift card worth $500.  They paid for the gift card using five fraudulent $100 bills.   The fake bills closely resembled real bills but were missing some security features.   The men spent about three minutes inside the store before leaving in a dark colored sedan with what appeared to be a white license plate.

The males are described to both be dark skinned males.  One was wearing torn blue jeans, a black belt a black sweatshirt and black shoes.  He had short black hair and a black beard.  The second male had longer black hair and was wearing a baseball cap with a black sweatshirt, black sweatpants and black and gold shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact New York State Police at (607)561-7400.  Case 11691973.

As a reminder to employees at businesses, be vigilant and take a look at large bills carefully.  Check large bills for security features and use a security pen if available.  Counterfeit bills may feel a little different, the serial numbers may all be the same, not evenly spaced or not aligned perfectly in a row.  Here is a helpful link for checking the legitimacy of a bill:  https://www.uscurrency.gov/denominations.
