Ice falls off tractor trailer, smashing windshield of vehicle behind it

A reminded to all motorists to brush off snow and ice off their vehicles.

On January 30, 2026, at approximately 12:35 p.m., a Trooper responded to a report of a vehicle with a windshield that shattered due to ice falling off of a tractor trailer while on Interstate 81.

An investigation determined that a tractor trailer and a Chevrolet pick-up truck were both traveling north on Interstate 81 in the town of Homer when a slab of ice flew off the tractor trailer and fell onto the pick-up behind it.  The pick-up truck’s driver side front window and windshield were shattered.

The driver tractor trailer did not stop.

The operator of the pick-up truck, a 23-year-old male of Camden, NY suffered hand and facial injuries.  He was checked out by EMS on scene and did not wish to go to the hospital.  Ron’s assisted with towing the vehicle from the scene.

The investigation is on-going.
