Horseheads Man Arrested for Grand Larceny Following Walmart Theft

On July 25, 2025, the New York State Police at SP Horseheads arrested Peter E. McCarthy, age 47, of Corning, NY, for Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree (E Felony) following a reported theft of merchandise from the Walmart located at 1400 County Route 64 in the town of Horseheads.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., State Police were dispatched to Walmart after store asset protection staff observed a male suspect exit the store with two full shopping carts of unpaid merchandise valued at $2,142.88. The suspect was seen walking toward a nearby Starbucks on County Route 64.

Troopers located a male suspect, Peter McCarthy. He was transported back to Walmart, where he was positively identified by asset protection staff. McCarthy was transported to SP Horseheads for processing.

Further investigation revealed McCarthy had an active Superior Court warrant out of SP Horseheads and an additional warrant from the Elmira City Police Department. Due to McCarthy’s prior felony convictions and outstanding warrants, he was arraigned in Town of Horseheads Court before Judge Banfield and remanded to the Chemung County Jail without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.
