On December 5, 2023, at about 2:52 a.m. State Police responded to the reports of a commercial vehicle off the roadway of I-88 in Duanesburg, NY.
The investigation has determined a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound exited the road and traveled down a steep ravine. The Commercial Vehicle was carrying multiple large cylinders containing compressed natural gas. The driver was removed and transported to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries and is currently listed in critical condition. I-88 has been closed between exit 24 and exit 25 with the assistance of the New York State Department of Transportation. The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the Schenectady County Emergency Management Office, and other local fire departments dispatched Hazardous Materials Response Teams, and a safety perimeter was established. This perimeter did not result in any home or business evacuations.
I-88 will remain closed in both directions until the hazardous materials are secured and safely removed. There has been no fire or explosion as a result of this crash. The name of the driver will not be released at this time.
The investigation into the cause of this crash is ongoing.
