Broome County man charged after fighting with Troopers while being placed under arrest

On July 8. 2025, at approximately 5:13 p.m., New York State Police at Binghamton arrested Joshua T. Shurtleff, age 32 of Castle Creek, NY for the class ā€œDā€ felony of Assault in the second degree and the class ā€œEā€ felony of Criminal Contempt in the first degree.  

Troopers were dispatched by the Broome County 911 Center to a report of an order of protection violation at a private residence in Castle Creek.  While on scene, Troopers determined that Shurtleff was in fact violating a full stay away order of protection. When Troopers attempted to place Shurtleff under arrest, he resisted arrest and began fighting with Troopers.  Shurtleff was ultimately placed in handcuffs.  

Shurtleff was checked out at a local hospital then processed at SP Binghamton.  He was later transported to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.
