On July 8, 2024, at 7:45 p.m., State Police responded to 10234 Plank Road in the town of Denmark for a crash involving a vehicle and a dirt bike. A preliminary investigation revealed a red 2023 Chevrolet Corvette, operated by Darren M. Ashcroft, age 57, from Carthage, NY, was traveling south on Plank Road in the town of Denmark when he attempted to pass a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling in the same direction. Due to oncoming traffic, Ashcroft wasn’t able to pass completely so he turned back into the driving lane, rear-ending the dirt bike.
The operator of the 2007 Kawasaki was 16-year-old Trean E. Arseneau, from Copenhagen, NY. He was transported via helicopter to Upstate Hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries.
Ashcroft showed signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested for DWI. He was transported to SP Lowville for processing and recorded a .13% BAC.
Ashcroft was charged with Vehicular Assault 2nd degree (class “E” felony), and a traffic ticket for no seat belt. All tickets were returnable to the town of Denmark later in August.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Rutland Fire Department, Lewis County Search and Rescue, and Lifenet.
