59 motorists ticketed during Operation Hard Hat in Cortland County

The New York State Police Troop C Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Unit and Troopers from SP Homer conducted an Operation Hard Hat Detail in Cortland County on May 4, 2026.

A total of 59 citations were issued during the detail that took place on Interstate 81 south near exit 52:

• Speeding – 33
• Seatbelt Compliance – 3
• Operating an Electronic Device – 10
• Failure to Move Over - 3
• Other – 10

Operation Hard Hat aims to crack down on reckless driving in work zones and protecting the men and women who maintain New York’s roadways and improving safety in active construction zones across the state of New York.

As part of the detail, State Troopers are embedded within an active work zone, often dressed as construction workers, to observe and identify motorists with risky behavior.  Once a violation is observed, uniformed Troopers in the area are advised and issue the appropriate citations.
