First Sergeant Michael E. Snell became a member of the New York State Police on November 15, 1999. He entered into a service retirement from the New York State Police after 23 years of service on May 24, 2023.

First Sergeant Snell was approved for a World Trade Center Disability Retirement effective September 28, 2023. On May 20, 2025, he died as a result of esophageal cancer stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site, following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

In response to the events of 9/11, First Sergeant Snell was assigned to aid with the search and recovery efforts in New York City, as part of the New York State Polic Detail.

First Sergeant Snell is survived by his wife and their four sons.
