Kevin P. Bruen

Kevin P. Bruen was nominated by Governor Cuomo and was unanimously confirmed by the New York State Senate as the 17th Superintendent of the New York State Police on June 7, 2021.

Prior to his confirmation as Superintendent, Bruen served as both Acting Superintendent and First Deputy Superintendent. In those positions, he served as chair of the Executive Committee and oversaw sections like the Aviation Unit, Planning and Research and Public Information. During the 2020 pandemic, Superintendent Bruen championed the agency’s COVID-19 response which included support at state-run testing and vaccination sites, and starting a program where EMS trained Troopers, along with County Health Departments, administered vaccinations to New York residents unable to leave their homes.

Prior to the New York State Police, Superintendent Bruen served as Deputy Commissioner and Counsel of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. At DOCCS, he directed a 40-person team of attorneys, paraprofessionals and administrative support that provided legal services to the Commissioner and 54 state correctional facilities with 54,000 inmates and 30,000 employees. 

Superintendent Bruen’s more than 20-year career with the State Police started with his position as Assistant Counsel. He served as a legal consultant and advisor to district attorneys, investigators, troopers and commanders on criminal investigations and proceedings. He also provided training to members and recruit Troopers in the Academy, and served as a subject matter expert in legislative matters that involved the State Police.

Prior to his state service, Superintendent Bruen worked as an Assistant District Attorney in both the Kings and Warren County District Attorney’s Offices.

Superintendent Bruen is a graduate of Boston College and Boston College Law School.
