Trooper Joseph J. Gallagher

 

Trooper Joseph J. Gallagher, 38, died on March 26, 2021, three years after being struck by a distracted driver.

On December 18, 2017, Trooper Gallagher was assisting a disabled motorist on the overpass from the Long Island Expressway to the Sagtikos Parkway in Suffolk County. Trooper Gallagher was outside his patrol vehicle setting up flares to direct traffic around the broken-down car, when he was struck by a driver who was texting behind the wheel.

Trooper Gallagher was transported to Southside Hospital for treatment.

 

Due to his traumatic brain injury, Trooper Gallagher was awarded disability retirement on April 2, 2020.

Trooper Gallagher died on March 26, 2021, from the long-term negative effects on his health due to his injuries from the crash.

Trooper Gallagher joined the State Police in 2014. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard prior to his service with the State Police. He was last stationed at SP Brentwood.

He is survived by his wife, children, parents and siblings.
