Senior Investigator John L. Carey became a Member of the New York State Police on October 18, 1982. He entered into a Service retirement from the New York State Police on July 30, 2014.  Senior Investigator Carey was last assigned to Troop G, Forensic Investigation Unit.

On October 24, 2024, Senior Investigator Carey died as a result of an illness stemming from his assignment to the World Trade Center site, following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.    

In response to the attacks of 9/11, Senior Investigator Carey was assigned to aid with the search and recovery efforts in New York City, as part of the New York State Police Detail.

Senior Investigator Carey is survived by his wife and four children.
