Troop D - May 25, 1956
On May 25, 1956, Trooper Gerard T. McHugh, 26, died from injuries he sustained in a one-car accident on Route 5 near Utica.
It is believed that Trooper McHugh was chasing a speeder when he lost control of his vehicle on a curve. He died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital from his injuries without regaining consciousness.
Trooper McHugh, a two-year veteran of the State Police, was assigned to the New Hartford Zone Headquarters of Troop D at the time of his death.
