Attica Prison Riots

Attica Inmates 1971

1971: On September 9, 1971, 2,200 inmates at Attica Correctional Facility rebelled over living conditions and demands for political rights. The inmates gained control of a portion of the prison, taking 42 staff members hostage. A four day period of negotiations took place in which the authorities agreed to a total of 28 demands made by the inmates, but the parties were unable to resolve the issues of amnesty from criminal prosecution for the takeover and the removal of the facility’s Superintendent. Governor Nelson Rockefeller ordered the State Police to take back control of the facility, which was accomplished on September 13, 1971. In all, 43 people lost their lives in the uprising, including 11 Corrections Officers.
