Acting Superintendent
Dominick L. Chiumento

Dominick L. Chiumento was appointed First Deputy Superintendent and Acting Superintendent on October 5, 2023 and leads more than 6,000 New York State Police sworn members and non-sworn staff.

Originally from western New York, Acting Superintendent Chiumento joined the New York State Police in 1990 as a member of the 168th Basic School. He started his career in Troop E at SP Wayland and transferred to SP Brewster in Troop K in 1991.

In 1995 he was appointed as an Investigator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and in 1999 he attained the permanent rank of Sergeant. While in the BCI, Acting Superintendent Chiumento attended polygraph school and was instrumental in the Division’s transfer from the Analog Instrument to the Computerized Polygraph.

In 2000 he was transferred to the Troop K Major Crimes Unit where he investigated multiple high-profile cases in the Hudson Valley. In 2003 he became the Assistant Director of State Police Crime Laboratories at the Mid-Hudson Crime Laboratory in New Windsor where he oversaw the disciplines of Drug Chemistry and Toxicology. He attained the permanent rank of Lieutenant in 2004.

In 2006 Acting Superintendent Chiumento assumed the role of Assistant Zone Commander in Troop K, Zone 1. In 2008 he was assigned as a BCI Lieutenant in Troop K, where he was assigned as the Intelligence Lieutenant and oversaw many of the high-profile cases throughout the Troop including the Diane Schuler Fatality Case on the Taconic State Parkway.

He has moved through the ranks as a BCI Captain in Troop NYC, a Uniform Captain in Troop K, a Major of the Crime Laboratory System, Staff Inspector – BCI in the Field Command Section, Lieutenant Colonel as the Chief of Staff to the Superintendent, and both a Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel in the Administration section.

Acting Superintendent Chiumento earned his undergraduate degree in Management from SUNY Plattsburgh and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the State University at Albany. He was an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice for 12 years at Dutchess Community College.
