Weigh In Motion Devices

In a cooperative effort with N.Y. State Department of Transportation, the N.Y. State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit has begun using Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) devices located at designated Interstate rest areas.

WIM allows troopers to screen passing commercial vehicle traffic and quickly determines which vehicle is potentially overweight or over dimensional. Commercial vehicles will be directed to use a designated lane in order to drive over the scale set in the roadway, which instantaneously weighs and measure the vehicle.

The vehicle is then directed to continue traveling or enter the rest area through use of variable message signs. In the rest area the trooper has already been notified of the vehicle weight and will direct the driver upon entering the rest area. The vehicle will be weighed on the scales to confirm the WIM readings.
