Duties & Responsibilities:Pilots will be hired into the unit as an Aircraft Pilot 1, M2 (SG-27), an Aircraft Pilot 2, M3 (SG-29), or an Aircraft Pilot 3, M4 (SG-31). Appointment levels will be dependent upon the pilots FAA ratings, their proficiency, and their job responsibilities within the Aviation Unit.

Pilots hired by the Division will be required to enter into a binding agreement whereby they become financially responsible for the cost of factory schools should they resign their position within one year of being sent to an "Initial" factory school.

Duties:

Conduct flight operations to include emergency MEDEVAC transport for the sick and injured, search and rescue, law enforcement missions including extradition and speed enforcement.

Perform executive transport missions for NYS executives and other government officials. This includes coordinating directly with the Governor's Office regarding flight scheduling, landing site designation and security. Accomplish all additional tasks to ensure flights are conducted to the highest level of safety and efficiency.

Perform specialized environmental missions. These missions normally require an aptitude for piloting the aircraft at low altitudes and slow airspeeds. This may include one of more of the following; aerial survey flights, survey flights of sportsmen, flights in support of law enforcement personnel and photographic flights.

Prepare for flights including; preflight of aircraft, evaluation of weather and airport conditions, filing of necessary flight plans and making any necessary decisions for the initiation, delay, or cancellation of flights, briefing and planning with others, as necessary.

Operate the aircraft to the highest level of safety consistent with the manufacturer's operations manual, the pilot's operating handbook, Federal Aviation Regulations (Code of Federal Regulations), and NYSP Aviation Unit standard operating procedures.

Comply with NYSP Aviation policies, and Division Rules, Regulations, and Instructions.

Accomplish administrative tasks indirectly associated with flight activities, currency and proficiency requirements, review of FAA Rules and Regulations, and review of aircraft and FAA procedures.

Maintain a sufficient understanding of aircraft systems to facilitate both in flight problem solving and interaction with maintenance personnel.

Delegate duties to a co-pilot when one is assigned.

Perform additional duties when assigned by the Chief Pilot.
Minimum and/or Preferred Qualifications:Aircraft Pilot 1, M2 (SG-27)

As an Aircraft Pilot 1, M2 (SG-27), the pilot may serve as the pilot in command of any NYSP airplane and/or helicopter in which he/she is determined by the Director of Aviation and the Chief Pilot to be qualified.

A minimum of 1,200 hours operating a commercial Rotorcraft with Instrument rating.


Aircraft Pilot 2, M3 (SG-29)

Must be proficient in all the duties of an Aircraft Pilot 1, M2 (SG-27)

AND

Possesses an FAA certification as an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) in Helicopters or Multiengine Airplanes AND is approved by the Chief Pilot for assignment within the unit as an Executive Pilot in Command

OR

Possesses one or more FAA certifications as flight instructor for helicopters, airplanes, multiengine airplanes, or instrument instructor AND is approved by the Chief Pilot for assignment or responsibilities within the unit as a unit instructor

OR

Possesses an FAA certification as an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) in Helicopters or Multiengine Airplanes AND in the opinion of the Chief Pilot may immediately assume duties as Executive Pilot in Command

OR

Possesses an FAA certification as an aircraft maintenance technician, with Airframe and Powerplant (A & P) certificate, AND is approved by the Director of Maintenance for assignment or responsibilities within the unit for aircraft maintenance.


Aircraft Pilot 3, M4 (SG-31)

Must be proficient in one or more of the duties of an Aircraft Pilot 2, M3 (SG-29)

AND

Is a dual-rated pilot with ATP ratings in both helicopters and multiengine airplanes AND is approved by the Chief Pilot for assignment or responsibilities within the unit as an Executive PIC

OR

Is a dual-rated pilot with ATP ratings in both helicopters and multiengine airplanes AND in the opinion of the Chief Pilot may immediately assume duties as Executive Pilot in Command in both category and class.
