POL Article 6 § 87 : Freedom of Information Law Requests
Request Process Pursuant to POL § 87 (FOIL)
All request for copies of records must be made in writingl; no verbal requests will be accepted. Note: As the FOI Law ensures the right of the public to seek government records, other government agencies seeking records do not need to use the FOIL process.
Requests may be submitted in letter format or by using the request form identified below and mailed or emailed to the agency.
To submit a FOIL request for records using this request form:
- Fill out the FOIL Request Form (a letter on company letterhead is also acceptable) and print
- Mail to the following address:
New York State Police
Attn: Records Access Officer

Albany, New York 12226-2252
To submit a FOIL request for records by email:
- Fill out the FOIL Request Form
- Click 'Submit by Email' (This will create an automated message directed to the Central Records Bureau FOIL Unit and will attach the form as a data file.)
- Click 'Send'
Note: If errors occur, please download the form, fill it out, and email it as an attachment or mail a printed version.
Note: The FOIL Unit will reply by email to the sending email address. You will see the following address: foilunit@troopers.ny.gov in the reply.
